Can you help?

We are looking for someone to take over the role of Meetings Secretary for LHG.

John Butlin has resigned due to other commitments. Barbara Burbidge, who did the job from 2002 to 2022, is unable to take up the reins again. Other committee members already have responsibilities for different aspects of the Group’s work.

The Meetings Secretary organises the annual programme, books and liaises with speakers and ensures everything runs smoothly. Suggestions for speakers and subjects come in from members, committee and elsewhere and, in conjunction with the committee, he/she aims to get an attractive and balanced programme which members and friends will enjoy. The programme for 2024 is already in place.

Monthly meetings are the essential part of what we are about and without them, LHG would not exist. If we are to continue beyond this year, it is vital we have someone willing to carry on the work, preferably as a full member of committee or working closely with it.

For more details please contact Barbara Burbidge or any committee member.

The Battle of Naseby
Tuesday 13th February at 7.30pm

We welcome back Dr Len Holden, local historian and one of our most popular speakers, as he returns to view the battle through the lens of Harborough Movie Makers in what promises to be a most interesting evening.
How did our local Harborough Movie Makers consider the decisive Battle of Naseby fought on 14th June 1645 during the English Civil War?  Come along and find out.

Dates for your diaries

Thorney, near Peterborough – Thursday 9th May

We are currently planning a visit to the very interesting village of Thorney, near Peterborough, on Thursday 9th May starting at 10.30. Travel time from Lubenham is just over an hour by car. There is ample parking at the sites to be visited and those less agile may want to use their cars during the visit, which we hope will include the Thorney Heritage Museum and introductory talk followed by Thorney Abbey. Arrangements for lunch and refreshments are in hand and more information and the cost to members will follow as soon as possible. The visit is expected to end at about 3.30pm.

Summer Supper – Saturday 17th August

This year’s Summer Supper will take place on Saturday 17th August in the Village Hall. Please make a note in your diary as this is an enjoyable and free event for all Members. More details to follow nearer the time.

It is getting harder each year to find new places to visit so please contact Margaret Lewis if you have any suggestions.

Membership Fees 2024

Don’t forget that you can renew your membership at the January meeting or any following meeting or contact our Treasurer Pat Dyke.

What do I get for my membership of Lubenham Heritage Group? Well, members enjoy several subsidised events and visits to places of interest, as well as our popular free Summer Supper. The Committee met recently to review the situation and, in the light of increasing costs, especially speaker’s fees, we have recommended that the charge for membership in 2024 will be £15.00 pa. The entry fee for meetings remains at £1.50 per meeting but has increased to £3.50 for non-members. This is the first rise for many years and we hope you understand the reasons for our decision.

Please note that membership not renewed by February 28th will expire on that date.
